Honoring God

On a hot summer Sunday, 18 year old Erin Whittaker drove down the back roads of Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma in her father’s red pick up truck loaded down with farm equipment. An hour and a half later, she came through again. This time she had a single saddle that shifted each time she came to a stop sign. She came by a third, fourth and finally, a fifth time. On the fifth trip, Beverly Castles, an elderly woman, hailed Erin down with a question.
“Erin Whitaker,” she shouted. “Isn’t Sunday a day of rest and time when we celebrate and meditate on the goodness of God?”
“Yes, it is, Mrs. Castles,” she said. “And you’re right it is the time we are supposed to worship and give thanks to what the Lord has given us. In order to help me praise the Lord even more, I’ve divided my worship of the Lord into two categories. This morning I worshipped in church with my family and friends. This afternoon I am putting into action what I’ve learned in church. That is to practice my Christianity. I am calling this ‘workship’. After finishing her discussion with Mrs. Castles,” Erin tooted her father’s horn to the tune of “Boomer Sooner” and as off again in a cloud of dust with a second hardy blast of “Boomer Sooner”.
Later in the afternoon when Erin had completed her tasks, she told Mrs. Castles that she and her father was helping a neighbor, Tim Cummings, move some of his farm equipment to property he had purchased two weeks ago. “I really enjoy the outdoors on a nice summer day. I also enjoy helping my neighbors and friends when I can,” Erin responded. “I believe helping a neighbor and family any day of the week is doing the work of God. I believe if Jesus was here right now he’d smile saying: ‘well-done’ or ‘way to go’.
Erin has chosen an interesting and creative way to honor the Lord on His day through her neighbors and friends. She has taught us that resting does not exclude helping others when their needs arise. Through her spirit, we might find creative ways to honor God helping others through projects that we devise.
