God-Color Glasses

“Why do I always sin?” sixteen year old Peggy Stephens asked her father as father and daughter prepared to enjoy their lunch on a very hot July afternoon.
“What do you mean, princess?”
“Well, dad, I just can’t seem to let bad things go,” she answered. “Yesterday, at work, everybody was really excited about finally getting a pork rib sandwich on the menu, but all I could think about was Janice. All she did all day long was to complain about how much work it would take to prepare the sandwich. I got so sick of her complaints I finally told her to just shut up. When I thought about it, I felt I was really mean to her. So I apologized. I now that think about it I was more than just mean to her I was also insensitive and hateful.”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, princess! I’ll bet God really appreciates the fact that you struggle with your shortcomings. I also believe God is equally please with you asking Janice’s forgiveness and trying to resolve your problem.”
Later, sitting in her bedroom, Peggy still dwelled upon what she said to a fellow worker, she began to rummage through her desk. In the back part of the desk was a pair of 3D glasses her father had given her when she was a little girl. She pulled the glasses out and before she could even think about it, she put them on.
The effect was amazing. The glasses had light-refracting lenses that sent splashes of color out from any object she focused her eyes on. Her aquaria and the aquatic life became a Fourth of July firework show, and the pom-poms on her wall shimmered like diamonds.
Earlier Peggy’s father had suggested that God might see hope in her struggles to become a better person. And if God looks at her in such a positive light, might she not try to do the same for Janice or anyone else she might be in conflict with. Peggy refocused on Janice until that moment, she remembered her kindness a year ago when at school she left her lunch money at home. Janice was the only person who gave her five dollars to get something to eat. Janice never asked her to repay the gesture. Janice also worked the hardest to raise money for families who suffered from the tornados in central Oklahoma a year ago. Peggy recalled that Janice had recently experienced the death of a beloved uncle. His death hurt Janice deeply.
Peggy put her newly discovered glasses near the picture of her family. If she really wanted to break the habit of thinking hateful thoughts, those light-refracting glasses could come in handy. Peggy folded her hands and said a brief prayer with a pledge to do her very best to look at the shortcomings of others—friends and enemies—through her new God—colored glasses.
