And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Mark 10:17.

A cursory look at this story will give an indication of a man looking for answers. Apparently he had discovered the answer but would want Jesus to declare them unto him in case his feelings of inadequacy might be assuaged by the Master's declaration.

Unfortunately the man's plight was a pitiable one indeed as it became apparent that he knew the answers but only wanted a "sanctification" of his disobedience by the Master. We are all like that. My guess is that he had confronted himself with the truth but needed a form of reassurance and a glimmer of hope so that he could enjoy his previous life. Apparently he never had any regard for heavenly treasure otherwise he would not have gone away sorrowful. Fortunately on this occasion he came to the wrong personae. When he did receive the just answer he could not but be sad because he was found out! Thank God that Jesus loved him and spoke the truth to him. He is saying the same to you today. Harden not your hearts.
