Women
People often think that I am younger than I really am; but I’m not ashamed to say that I was born during a time when there were no mobile phones. As a matter of fact, we did pretty well without them!
At school, I learned how to type on a typewriter, but today’s young generation probably don’t even know what a typewriter looks like! I loved the smell of the carbon copied exercise sheets that my teacher used to give us and in those days, nobody had a computer.
When I think back to just a few years ago, I realise how much the world has changed. I remember studying the Cold War, admiring the Twin Towers, and only going to the cinema to watch films that were suitable for my age. Films that had any reference to sex or drugs had an 18 certificate. It’s different today – it’s different in every way.
The reality is that the world has changed tremendously. People have also changed dramatically. In my days, children played in the streets, while today they’re indoors playing video games and surfing the net.
Women used to look forward to their wedding day, but today many only look forward to having a nice time with a guy. It used to be embarrassing for a woman to dress like a man, but today it’s a common sight.
The world has changed, the people have changed, and let’s not forget how nature has changed. We hear more about natural disasters now than ever.
So, everything around us has changed, some changes are for better and others are for worse. But the important thing we should think about is if we ourselves have changed at all, and if so, how?
Many of us keep our old ways for far too long: Self-pity Sally, Angry Agatha, Grudgy Gabi, Lazy Laura, Arrogant Ariel, Lying Lucy, Gossipy Gwen, etc. Many years have passed and all kinds of situations have come and gone. Opportunities to change have also came along, and still, some of us are the same versions of ourselves as we were 10 years ago, except for a few new additions, such as a mobile phone and perhaps a laptop.
What is it going to take for you to change for the better? To evolve into a more mature woman who does not solely exist to waste oxygen? You may have started out making all kinds of plans, including learning how to drive, losing weight, and speaking a new language. Now where are all those plans? In a diary somewhere inside an old trunk, in the loft of an old house?
That’s when a woman becomes an old lady. It’s not her age or the lines on her face which make her old, it’s her attitude. Let’s face it, if you don’t improve with time, you worsen. Either you become better or you become worse.
If you don’t decide today that you’ll break this cycle you’ve gotten yourself into, nothing is going to change, even if you pray about it. There are things in life that only we can do—God cannot do them for us. He can help, but only after you start your engines rolling.
In faith,
