Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday July 16, 2008

Today is my day for the monster. Monster is the local gas station. I remember when they were rightly called service stations. Now the poor employees of Gas Stations stand inside and pray the customers pay with a debit or credit card at the pump and do NOT come inside to add yet another complaint to the ever growing list. One friend at a Gas Station said that she fully expects to die at the hands of some enraged customer who finally has had enough and will not take it anymore, and instead of throwing a TV out of a high window will roughly grab her and throw her under a passing bus. It could happen.

One man says that when he comes back from the Gas Station and the kids cry for milk, he tells them to go and sniff the gas tank as this will remind them of exotic perfume and will also quench their thirst for milk; or thinking.

Joyce and I are preparing to celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary this August and I am seriously thinking about giving her a week’s supply of gasoline as her special gift.

What are we, the New Peasants of America, to do in times like this? For starters we can rearrange our thinking about life instead of focusing on the rapine mind set of big oil and a calloused congress.

Norman Vincent Peale gave a thought along these lines when he said:

"Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that."

The pinch in our wallet is not the long term problem, but we must discover new ways concerning transportation and as we do this, we will most likely be surprised at the serendipitous outcropping of very good things we would never have thought of otherwise. Personally, I intend to work harder and smarter triggering a personal economic boom and not give the cost of gas for a Corvette the slightest thought! Nice dream. According to the news, online education is experiencing a boom! This will force campus oriented facilities to improve the quality and lower the cost of on campus instruction and many will benefit. The makers of sweaters will benefit as most people will save money by turning the thermostat to a more sensible level. And Neonatal care units will prosper as bedrooms will be set at colder temps. The list goes on, but you get the idea.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said it well:

"This time as all times is a very good time, if we but know what to do with it."

Knowing what to do with this time requires, at least on my part and I'm sure most of you, sincere prayer for wisdom, which is promised to believers in James 1:5,

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Get your mind off the gas tank and on the Lord.
