Luke 21:26 “Men’s hearts failing them from fear”

Fear is an emotion we all are well acquainted with in this life. God has built into our human nature a response mechanism to things that would harm us physically called fear. This built in fear from God is not something that is designed to control us or dominate our thinking, but it is an emergency reaction. Its purpose is for our protection. However, today psychologist and psychiatrist have identified hundreds of fears or phobias that people all over the world are struggling with in their daily lives. There is a website that lists all the known phobias that man has identified from A-Z(www.Phobialist.com).

Things listed on this site as phobias or recognizable fears are absolutely ridiculous. However, to the individual people suffering from these things it is the most serious thing in the world. People’s hearts are weighed down in fear, which produce all types of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. Suicide is often the result of such mental exasperation.

These types of fear are not normal and actually are satanic oppression. Much of the anger and hatred in the world today is a result of fear. Fear of the unknown. Should a child of God experience these types of fears? A child of God is not immune to Satanic attack from the enemy. A child of God cannot be possessed by the devil.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970)1 said, “Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.” He also said, “Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes.”

This type of fear is a result of the condition of man’s heart. The Bible tells us that the heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it. Throughout the Bible God is constantly telling His people to fear not? Despite that constant admonition by the Lord the Hebrew people seemed to live in fear many times. Why did they fear?

Dr. Ernest Becker (1924-1974)2 stated that “We now know that the human animal is characterized by two great fears that other animals are protected from: the fear of life and the fear of death... Heidegger brought these fears to the center of his existential philosophy. He argued that the basic anxiety of humanity is anxiety about being-in-the-world, as well as anxiety of being-in-the-world. That is, both fear of death and fear of life, of experience and individuation.”

We find these quotes from two of the most respected men in their individual disciplines about fear to be quite revealing of fear itself. How can men of such intelligence and scholar be so fearful in this life? Man has been racked with fear from the moment of our separation from God in disobedience. Adam ran and tried to hide himself from God in the Garden of Eden. Fear made Adam hide. Fear is a product and result of mans separation from fellowship and intimacy with God. No matter an individual man’s earthly human intelligence, knowledge, or wisdom, he can never pull himself from that gripping fear that will haunt or plague every man without intimate fellowship with God.

This book will humbly attempt to ask and answer the question in Biblical detail “Why does Man fear everything but God?” This book will not spend time trying to confront the many fears and phobias that grip man today and that have gripped man since the fall in the Garden of Eden. That has already been done in many earlier books. In contrast, this book will, through the exposition, analysis, and detailed study of the Word document from the lives of those in the Old Testament and people today why we fear. When the promise we have from God is Him we can to Fear Not!
