Apologetics
Unseen Worlds are Real Too!
Here are some questions all humans should ponder.
-If something can’t be seen by the naked eye, does it exist?
-If something can’t be heard, does it make a sound?
-If something can’t be felt, is it there?
-If something has no perceptible taste, is it food?
In this age of Positivism, we can’t imagine something to be real if not perceived by senses or scientific instruments. Positivism is a philosophy that states the only authentic knowledge is based on actual sense experience. Such knowledge can only come from affirmation of theories through strict observation. Metaphysical speculation is therefore avoided. That’s why I love the movie, Horton Hears a Who (a Dr. Seuss book from 1954). Horton the elephant hears a noise from a small speck and realizes that the speck is a tiny town (Whoville). Only after enough noise is generated by the townspeople, especially the Who, Jo Jo, could other animals in the Jungle of Nool realize that Horton is telling the truth about this minuscule world.
There are countless bodies in space that can’t be seen by the eye, yet clearly seen through the eyepiece of a telescope. Recently, the most powerful telescope in the world was installed at Mount Graham in southeastern Arizona. This $120 million Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) uses two massive 27 foot in diameter mirrors mounted side-by-side with the resolution power of a 75 foot mirror. Scientists believe that the resolution of this LBT will be 10 times better than the Hubble Space Telescope. The twin mirrors were polished to an accuracy of 30 nanometers, or 3,000 times thinner than a human hair. Ten years in the making, this telescope will allow astronomers to see further into space with the hope of understanding the origin of the Universe.
Although this LBT will allow unprecedented viewing of outer space, this remarkable instrument will not allow man to see the edge of the Universe. This fact no doubt has frustrated scientists from the first time Galileo looked into space in 1609 till this day.
So much of what we believe about space is based on complicated calculations and theories that make it impossible to separate truth from fantasy. Determining distances to heavenly bodies in space and their speed of expansion are in question today by some Astrophysicists. Having taken two astronomy courses in college, I’m far from an expert on the subject, but in my reading it is clear there is much speculation on this subject. Distances in space are based on the Hubble Constant that is far from an exact number. Dr. Hubble in the 1940’s thought the universe to be 2 billion years old, but had to change the value of his constant since geologist told him that they had found rocks that were over 2 billion years old.
This article isn’t interested in arguing the distances to objects in space or the age of the Universe, but to ask questions of reality. Even with the most technologically advanced telescope in history we still can’t see everything that exists in space. So, if we can’t see it does it exist?
We can’t see the edge of the Universe, so too scientists can’t see inside the mechanisms that make up matter, the atom. People are amazed when they learn that we can’t see inside the atom, but that facts about the atom and its make up are based on observations of its movement. No one really knows what they might find inside the atom. Some believe that there are objects in the atom called Higgs Bosom that give the atom their mass.
Sometime in 2008, the Large Hadron (neutrons and protons are also known as hadrons) Collider will accelerate protons near the speed of light and collide with the hope of showing the inside of an atom. This year might be a year of unparalleled discoveries for scientists if they gain access to the inner workings of the atom. One must ask, however, if the inside of the atom remains a secret, is there anything inside it?
I’m sure you see the point of writing about the unfathomable dimensions of the Universe, or the miniscule world of the atom. Both worlds are only perceived through specially designed instruments that allow the human eye to see ‘other worlds’ that would not otherwise be seen. Even with these fantastic technological wonders at our disposal, we still can’t see the total picture of these worlds.
As we need technology to see great distances or the smallest objects, so we need a Special Perception Device (SPD) to see the things of God. The foundation of science is reason, but one of the greatest scientist in history said, “I have no better expression than religious for this confidence in the rational nature of reality and its being accessible, to some degree, to human reason. When this feeling (of religious nature of creation) is missing, science degenerates into mindless empiricism (too much reliance upon experience)”. Einstein apparently understood the limits of the scientific method.
Let’s return to the questions asked at the beginning of this article. They relate to perception or the ability to see something. Before the age of technology, did unseen stars or unseen matter exist? Such a question is rhetorical, but should be asked in an age of Positivism. Those of us that believe in the unseen spiritual world are viewed as fools or simpletons, but in reality we have the ability to see with spirit eyes, mind, and heart.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could produce a set of glasses that could be given to every person that would open their eyes to the unseen world of spiritual realities? Creation, mankind, and life would be seen as they truly are. Rather than Creation being a random/chance thing, it would be seen as a marvelous creative act of an all powerful God. Mankind would be seen as a precious, amazing gift of the Creator and designed to bring glory and honor to the Creator, rather than a cheap evolutionary product with little or no value. Rather than seeing life as something with shallow, selfish motives; it would be seen as something to love in that we are here to serve others and our God.
Although no glasses exist to open the eyes of humanity, there is a SPD in each and every person. One must be open to the idea that this world, in all of its creative genius gives us a glimpse of God, and Christ’s death and resurrection show love in a way that can’t be comprehended. The Gospel was proclaimed to me at the age of 15 (40 years ago) and from that point till the present, this faith has given me a SPD. The Bible, which was nonsense before the SPD, became a light in my life; this SPD allowed me to see my surroundings in ways unperceived before the act of placing faith in my Savior.
We can try to explain the new eyes to others, but realize that they can’t see what we see. The way they can see what we are trying to tell them is by living a life of uniqueness.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” Ephesians 2:8-10
“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” Ephesians 4:1-2
Unseen worlds are real, even if we can’t see them. Science knows that there are many realms that can’t be seen without enhanced senses. Then why can’t they believe that spiritual realms exist? They need the Church to show them lives of unique character and comely behavior that attracts them to the idea of seeing another unseen world. This world is energized by faith in a Savior they have never seen or touched, and that His passionate love for them was proved by His death.
Yes, I believe even though my eyes can’t see.
