Larry Lilly's Liberty Letter Friday July 4, 2008

A brief note on true Liberty based on a speech given by Judge Learned Hand who served as Appellate Judge of the Second Circuit from 1924 to 1951. He may have been the most respected Federal Judge in our history.

In a speech "The Spirit Of Liberty" delivered on May 21, 1944 His Honor said:

"The spirit of liberty is the spirit which in not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias."

This part of the speech is rare in its understanding of the higher working of the spirit of liberty. A little later he got to the core of true liberty when he said:

"Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it."

My prayer for you, for our America and for myself is that we may grow to a new appreciation of the liberty we enjoy in our land and always keep lit the light of liberty in the dearest place in our heart.

2 Corinthians 3:17 "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

A heart filled with the Holy Spirit will be a heart set on fire with the understanding and courage of liberty.
