Christmas Cruise: Come with me as I try to explain it! .....
“The water was like glass….”
I had heard that phrase a thousand times before, but never understood it. Years earlier, when I went whale watching, the water was turbulent. When I took a boat to Catalina Island as a teenager, all I noticed was fumes and seasickness… When I stand at the edge of the ocean, the waves are crashing…. But glass-like? I could not imagine it at all.
Then, I was invited to go on a Holiday Lights boat cruise in the nearby harbor. No waves, just serene moonlit water. We cruised through the harbor passing all the houses and boats and docks decorated for Christmas. We saw Christmas angels and snow men, and palm trees lit up with hundreds of lights. Christmas music played softly throughout the boat.
There was no turbulence, not even any resistance as the boat made its way from one glorious site to the next. The air was crisp, the boat was full of laughing people, awe-struck children (and grownups too). The canals of Naples, California, too narrow for our boat, beckoned us to take a walking tour and see the beautiful displays of decorations… but I was at peace here.
I cannot remember a more breathtaking time – not just because the lights and decorations were lovely, but because that feeling of being afloat – riding along on an ocean that man did not make, aware of the stars in the sky and the ocean breeze caressing my cheek. I felt very close to my Lord, yes, even there in the midst of a hundred or so people, I felt Him there, reminding me that He never leaves me, reminding me of his strength, power, majesty and love. He reminds me that no matter how the waves of life come and go, that He is my buoyancy. He will keep me afloat.
