Why do Aspiring Creative Professional Suffer from Creative Blocks?

In an environment that is neither conducive nor sympathetic to how the creative mind works, creative professionals often find themselves in a place where their creativity is appears to be hindered at the very least and completely blocked at the very worst. It is nothing new. The most brilliant of minds have suffered from the lack of creative streams shall we say, flowing from the kinesis of the left side of the brain, which is where most creative types are said to think from.

The most frustrating aspect of this dilemma is the fact that the end can often be seen in terms of a project or a piece of work that is mused over; the concepts and ideas are often well thought out and planned, supportive frameworks - some theoretical, some practical, are often readily available to bring the process to fruition; others may be on hand to act as a catalysts in whatever credible capacity they represent to help propel the idea, concept and project into the stratosphere of success. Yet somehow for whatever reason the actual action of doing is hindered and a brilliant idea remains just that; a stalled progression and a figment of the imagination that remain in the mind of the creatively gifted one. Frustrating it is indeed!

In my own quest to completely utilise and share with the universe every God given creative gift that I have been blessed with, I have found myself at times just going over and over in my mind, as to how I can synergise all of my gifts together and produce a single body of ‘work’ that would represent who I am creatively. So, in a nutshell what I think I would produce, and if it were covered by a glossy, would headline something like this;

“GospelJazzNuclassicSoul Singer & Dancer turns her passion to the catwalk and debuts her poetic, stylised fashion icon show for Top Parisian Fashion Designer and meets guests after the show to sign copies of her hot off the press book ‘East Meets West – From Urban to Suburban - Unearthing Ethnic Style in a Global Village’. A fashion odyssey celebrating ethnic inspired textile fashion and design and how it has influenced mainstream western fashion and what we buy on the high street today.”

Ok so that hasn’t happened yet, but it just might. If I can somehow galvanize my potential and turn it around, then all things are possible. So what is the point to this article? Well, do we as creative types settle for the 10/90 rule i.e. 10 per cent of creative people will turn their gifts in lucrative careers while the other 90 percent will plod along getting the odd gig here or there, but not making much of a career out of the honey pot opportunity that they were born with? (Note; my own observation and ‘qualitative social research’ leads me to this quota hypothesis) Je crois que non! – on the contrary, rather I am a firm believer that it is the very obstacles that are in the way, mental, physical - and some of them are often more a matter of perception than reality, that means we can actually look at the challenge with impartiality and literally use the creative freeze as a catalyst to propel us into our greatest work and even moment, which with hard work, perseverance, patience and if course the wonderful lifestyle of networking in its best possible sense, i.e. I choose to give, not to receive because I can and I want to, and so the law of reciprocity will always befriend me - we can continue into a season and God willing a lifetime of creative momentum on the pathway the we have chosen or rather are blessed to part of, to play our part and impact today’s generation and beyond and ultimately add eternal value to that which the universe and heavens placed us on the earth to be.

So, if today you are thinking over your lot and how you would like your life to be, don’t be disheartened by what may look like a up hill struggle to creatively shine and make your mark and produce, present, perform and pay the bills. But rather embrace your uniqueness; you were created that way for a reason. Find new ways of getting your ‘stuff’ out there, you may be surprised who you meet along the way who will think you are fantastic and enjoy your talent. Share your gifts it with others, freely, and share it with yourself. Get to know you – rather than what you do you – there is a difference; ok, so you write a brilliant love song – but why did you write it? Did you write it because you can or because you are in touch with you and your love and the love of the universe and universal love – was it a spiritual exercise? or a practical one, or maybe it was a bit of both? You decide. That’s just an example, as not all of us here write love songs, but the point is that now is the time to take yourself to the next level and you can only do that when you push yourself into the supernatural dimension of ‘I Can’. Do you remember that most annoying catchphrase ‘there is no such word as I can’t’ your teachers would spiel when you were at school? Well excuse me for being the bearer of Good News, but guess what they were right! Jesus once said ‘If you speak to this mountain and say be though removed and be cast into the sea so shall it be’ and so it is for all of us, but guess what again? You gotta believe! - Nobody is going to believe in the extraordinary for you. You have to believe in you and nobody is going to take you there but yourself. It’s up to you and it’s up to me.

We already posses the talent to do what we do, agreed? Indeed, this we are assured of otherwise we would not continuously be pulled towards the creative sphere. Our natural gravitation towards our area of gifting and sometimes all things creative suggests that we do have a place in the creative realm that was prepared just for you and I. Don’t ever be mistaken and think ‘oh well the top spot has already been taken in my field, who am I going to be, besides if I were that brilliant I wouldn’t suffer from these blocks?’ Or perhaps you tell yourself, ‘who wants to listen to or read or enjoy my work? Its just too competitive out there for my liking’ Listen there is enough pie up in the sky for everybody in this entire world, and that truth is even more so once we are in our correct positions. Its matter of being in synchrony with heavens perspective of who you really are on earth; then you will be ready to let your creativity flow and you will find yourself in accommodating and appreciative circles, and your work quite simply, will not feel like work anymore. When you find yourself at this juncture, for sure the blocks will be become less and less until they eventually fade away. So what are you and I waiting for? God has given us the colours and he has prepared the canvass now all we have to do is put easel in hand and paint our very own D’angelo. So one last final bit of encouragement to you, in my own lovely trademark style, get you butt up, it’s time to go!
