As 20th/21st Century Christians, we are not so grounded in the 'thou's', 'thine's', 'ye's' and the 'saith unto's' anymore in our everyday language as the Old King James Bible Version indicates. Modern Christians can move with the times and not forfeit or harm their relationship with God if they don't use OKJV language.
There are many fundamentalist preachers who stick with the Old King James to quote scripture and that is just between them and God. Versions of the Holy Bible is the choice of the individual, and is not the main focus here.
However, words and phrases amongst Christians can change dramatically as we move closer to the Second Coming of Christ. Even OKJV preachers don't use Old King James phrases when they communicate with people. Yet, our modern language has created new ways of expressing ourselves and Christians are no different. Today, Christians are often referred to as "Jesus Freaks" and even enjoy being referred to that way. This creates an awareness in us that we are suffering for Jesus and to be joyous in that.
But as we come across new modern trends, we can often hear ourselves and other Christians invent new words to witness and quote scripture. As long as we are clear as to what we mean, then our communication will be effective.
Culture can also play a part. 'The Aussie Bible' is a great example of an expressive publication using Australian lingo to share the gospel of Jesus without taking the Truth and importance away from The KJV.
However, one issue that is becoming a worrying trend in communicating amongst Christians is seen on the internet. More and more Christians are not realising when they are using God's name in vain to fit into the current trend of language. I have seen so many Christian teenagers type a message 'omg, so and so just came in' or Geezus, that sucks'. The contamination from the world's cold and offensive language is very subtly moving into Christian circles. Do we not say that 'omg' is not breaking the 4th commandment, even if it was meant to be 'oh, my gosh'? The point is that people on the other end don't know what you mean when they read 'omg'.
Spelling is yet another issue. On the internet it's another language for the sake of time and effort, and that's when we find 'web' language being transfered into our witnessing and normal life. I can't imagine, from the point of view of an 80 or 90 year old, who has been through depression and war, trying to understand phrases like 'My Yahoo, God Tube, got booted, download, Google search, blogs. Even internet spelling like login, site and lol would be confusing to them if they aren't regular internet users. But that is just the trends in the different generations. They would have had a 'modern' lingo during the war years that we would not relate to so it often goes both ways. As long as we are clear in our meanings, more so in these days of the internet.
Modern Christian language, whatever the culture, can be a positive resource if used approprately to the individual situations. It's just a matter of Christian teachers being discerning when using Christian language in their witnessing.
