Grief

My eyes
have grown
dim
with
grief.
And,
all my members
are like
a
shadow.

"I hate Mother's Day,
Lord."

"I know, child."

"Yeah."
(Silence.)

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

(Silence.)
"Yeah, it's just a sad
holiday for me;
Ya KNOW?"

"Yes, child."

"Hey, I guess I can't,
like, TALK to her,
or nothin'....
huh?"

"No, My child."

(Nod.)
(Silence.)
"Well......I hope she's
doin' okay up There,
Lord.
(Silence.)
I hope Y'ur treatin' her, right."

[SILENCE.]

"Yeah, and I hope You
bent the rules, a little,
and let her have her ole'
pets back."

[CHUCKLE!]

"Ya know, Lord:
what with that
'NO PETS in HEAVEN'
rule, and all."

"Who AM I,
little one?"

"Eh.....the One Who
gave me my MOM?"

[NOD.]
"Yes, child."

(Silence.)
"Remember that
time our bird, Chirpie,
got sick,.....and she
sat up all night with
it?"

[NOD.]

"Yeah.
That's about all I can say.
I don't really want to
talk about it."

"Yes, child."

"You just better be
takin' good care of her:
is all, I CAN SAY!"

[SILENCE.]

"I sorta picture her
in a little, dusty apartment:
filled with a bunch'a
Heinz 57 dogs, and
paperback books,
and lots of
Degas pictures."

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"Not to mention, a
sundry assortment of
my ole' cats."

[SILENCE.]

"That's about it.
I can't talk about it,
anymore, Lord."

[NOD.]

"Don't tell her about
the ugly stuff, Lord....
OKAY? I really don't
want her to know,
OKAY?"

[SILENCE.]

"Yeah; I know Y'ur
not gonna tell me.
But, that's okay."

"Have faith, child."

"Yeah.
I guess.
(Sigh.)"

"I love you, child."

(Silence.)
"Hey, LORD?
I just thought 'a
SOMETHIN'!"

[PATIENT SIGH.]
"What IS it,
Mein kinder?"

"HEY!
You know what I'm
gonna ASK Ya,
DON'T Ya?"

[PATIENT NOD.]

"Well......DID YA?"
Did Ya let her have
CHIRPIE, back?"

[LOVING GAZE.]
"Trust Me."

Do you know
when the
mountain goats
spring forth?
Do you
observe
the calving
of the hinds?
..Do you know
the time
when they
bring forth?
When they
crouch,
bring forth
their offspring,
and are
delivered
of their
young?
