Encouragement
I recently had what I would call a not-so-earth shattering but life-altering epiphany. While driving to work, the usual frustration clouded my mind. I reasoned with myself, and God, about why I cannot write. I’m not talking about a simple case of writer’s block, but I have poured myself into four and a half novels for children and young adults over too many years, to no avail. There is still a yearning to write but the motivation has dissipated, the passion quenched. My engine had run out of gas.
I came to the realization that what I lacked was an audience. Not to feed any self-serving desire for glory or wealth, but because an integral and necessary part of writing – of communicating – is the receiver. To me, there must be a purpose, an end result, a person to whom I write. Anything less would be simply a colossal waste of precious time. My concluding thought was that, until there was someone to write for, I could not write.
A gentle voice in my mind followed: Write for Me. Even as I write this, as I recall that clear message from Heaven, a euphoric wave rushes along the surface of my skin, and I must clear my eyes of joyful tears.
Of course! How often have I taught others that we ought to serve the Lord without concern for the consequences of our toil? In that insightful moment with my Lord, a frustrated teacher became a humble student.
And so I must and forever will endeavor to write first for Him, for Jesus, from whom this wonderful yearning has come. I repent of my sin of trying to take the outcome of the blessing I’ve received into my own hands. I give this up to my Lord and, in deepest gratitude, trust that He is glorified by that which He has given me.
Perhaps you struggle with a yearning to do something you feel you are well suited for but are not able to put it into practice, or are ridiculed every time you take a step toward your dream. The message God has for you, for all of us, is to do it anyway. Do it for Him.
When God lovingly knit you together, He imbedded particular gifts and talents into your soul, the very essence of who you are. It seems reasonable that He had a purpose in mind in doing so, and that he would not leave you ignorant as to their presence. May you always know that God is pleased when you strive to fulfill the purpose for which He has made you.

I started out writing for me and me alone. I still do it! But you have reminded me that I was not actally writing for myself, but for a higher purpose.
Thank you for the reminder and whenever the need takes you, go with the flow of your pen.
