Often we can easily say that God is first in our lives but is He really? Do we give that statement more lip service than actually doing it?

Going to church doesn’t equate to spending time with God. You would think it would but God isn’t impressed with our church attendance. We need to be faithful in our church attendance but this alone isn’t what God wants from us. We can easily schedule God in for an hour or so on Sunday mornings but God certainly deserves more time on our schedule than that. We say that we don’t have time to do everything but, really, think about it. How much time do we simply “waste” on our busy schedules. Perhaps if you and I would put down the remote control and turn the television off, we could find some time that we could give to God. We need to be better stewards of our time.

Time with God isn’t wasted. Spending time with God puts everything else in order. I find in my own life that when I have preempted God’s time with something else that I miss it and it isn’t long before I am reminded of it. With everything else in life, nothing is more important than spending time with Him. Paul said that “I count everything but loss” (Philippians 3:8) and that should also be our attitude.

God is a loving father and He desires to give us the desires of our hearts but He won’t stoop to the level of being a genie in a bottle. Sometimes the only time God becomes a priority is when there is a tragedy in life. I call this the “fire extinguisher” experience. People will pass by their time with God through their days but when something goes wrong, they are ready to pray or “get serious” about God. Unfortunately, the “seriousness” ends when the crisis is over. Although God loves us when we are like that, that isn’t the kind of relationship He deserves. He could love us so much more if we would only spend more time with Him.

God certainly made us a priority when He sent His son to die for our sins. He had to really love us to make a way to reconcile us to Him. Without that sacrifice, we would truly be without any hope. We would only live and die. Period. No eternal life and no happiness in this life at all. If we were on row and facing certain then someone came and died for us so we could be free, I think we would have a different perspective on the sacrifice.

God isn’t impressed with our busyness or what title we have. Of all the meetings we might have on our schedule, the most important one is with Him. Let’s schedule Him in. Write Him down (in pen) on your calendar. I assure you that He won’t be late or a no show.
