During my summers in high school, I would earn a little money by detassling corn. For the urbanites and hill people who are out there, detassling corn involved plucking the tassel off a corn plant. Not just one tassel, but every tassel of every corn plant, in mile after mile of tall corn rows that went uphill both ways, in 100° heat and 100% humidity from dawn until dusk, seven days a week. On top of that, the corn leaves would cut your face just before sweat would roll down to let you know what fun you were having for minimum wage. Those were the good ol’ days.

The highlight of the day, other than the long bus ride home, would be the lunch break. I would plod back to the bus to fetch my thermos of sweetened iced tea. After consuming half the jug in one gulp, I felt refreshed. Nothing could have tasted better after toiling in the scorching summer sun.

Can you recall a time when you were extremely thirsty? I’m sure each of you could share a vivid memory of being parched. For some, it may have been a serious situation, even to the point of death. Humans cannot survive without water for an extended period of time.

What do you think it means to be desperate for God? I think it means to have a continuing and passionate thirst for the presence of God, much like being in need of a drink of life-giving water. The Bible states this thought beautifully in the Psalms:

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
Psalms 42:1-2 (NIV)

What a magnificent picture! Can you identify with the yearning of the psalmist? If not, ask God to put the desire deep within your soul. And if you can relate, fervently seek after Him with your whole heart. Only God can quench the thirsting of our innermost beings.
