Song Lyrics
“Hey, there, Steven. What’s up?” my buddy, who’s also my drummer, Taylor Marc greets me. I give him a high five as my answer. As I wait for other band members of Hear Say to show up, I begin tuning my electric guitar. I hold my guitar (that I can’t live without) close to my ears. I pluck the first E string to get it tuned. As I continue tuning the other five strings to their perfect pitch, my other band members trudge into my spacious basement. Zach Mason, our background vocals grabs the microphone from our band storage closet. Zach Mason has blond hair and is long enough to do perfect head banging. Martian Miller, another electric guitar player has brown hair with a Mohawk. They all begin setting up their instruments. When I start tuning my G string of the guitar, it snaps back and hits me in the face.
“Does anyone have an extra string?” I ask around to my band members. “I need a G string.”
“Oh, yeah, right here,” Zach answers. He snatches one from his string packet from his guitar case. Zach’s black guitar case is covered with his favorite bands bumper stickers. Zach hands me the G string. I attach the G string to my electric guitar. Now we are ready to begin practice for tomorrow’s concert. The Fender amplifier is right next to me so I turn up the volume, hoping not to disturb my neighbors or my parents upstairs.
“Are we ready now, Steven?” Taylor questions me. “I have our drum set out.” I glance at Taylor, who’s sitting on the stool behind the Hear Say drums.
“Almost,” I claim. I precede our rehearsal by tugging my black, electric guitar over my broad shoulders; my blue guitar strap rests on them. I glance at my music sheets of the opening song for tomorrow morning.
I belt out the words of the first measure on the page in front of me. I strum the E chord three times as I had composed a week earlier. After an hour of practicing, we feel really confident. But during our first one through, our electricity went out. I’m guessing it went out because of the severe thunderstorm outside. Lightening just flashed and it filled the basement’s windows only for a few seconds.
I couldn’t see a thing. I couldn’t even see my hands in front of me. Great, just what we needed. Right before our second song for tomorrow. I’m hoping we won’t cancel the concert because we’re not ready. However, my band members and I are stuck here in the pitch black darkness of my basement. I sigh deeply and frown to myself. This hasn’t happened before. Not during practice anyways. I’m guessing I should cancel the band practice-the rest of it at least. I stumble through the blackness to find the guitar stand, to rest my guitar on it. It’s disappointing because we’ve been working on this for weeks and now finally pulling it together.
