John 14:6 – Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the Father except through me.”

The word examined here is the word “life”. Since every human already has a certain kind of life (in the sense of being physically alive as well as conscious and not dead), this then cannot be what He means, but rather, He must mean not mere “life” but “eternal life”. However, what is eternal life? When one thinks of the word “eternal” another word immediately springs to mind which is “unending” and while that is certainly true, it seems clear that there is still a deeper meaning to “eternal life” in the heart of God. This deeper meaning is elsewhere stated by Jesus later in this same gospel when He says, “this is eternal life; that they may know You, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ whom You sent.” – John 17:3. So then, eternal life is not simply life that does not end but a certain kind of life, that is a genuine relationship of the soul with God (the only true God) and Jesus Christ (the eternal Son of God and Immanuel – God with us). This is what gives the believing soul “eternal life” and gives to the unbelieving soul what might be called “eternal death” which is eternal separation from God and an absence of any kind of genuine relationship with Him except as an object of wrath. It might be said, then, that when Jesus says He is life He means that He is God and in relationship to God and that our relationship to Him is the source of true and eternal life while all else is death.
