Being A Blessed Receiver

Like many people Navy Ensign Sharon Ramsey had been taught as a child: “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. As newly commissioned officer in the United States Navy, Ensign Ramsey attempted to make this her motto no matter what her rank would become as she planned to make the Navy her career. However, she quickly learned that receiving can be a blessing as well.

While on her first tour of duty in the Persian Gulf, Ensign Ramsey became sick. So sick, in fact, that she was ordered by the ship’s physician to sick bay. Reluctantly, she remained there for a week. Though fit to be returned to duty, the young Ensign had difficulty performing the simplest task. When peers or subordinates offered help, she would proudly say, “Thanks, but no.”

Finally, Ensign Juanita Flores showed up to her cabin with a small container of chicken tortilla soup insisting that she take it. The two young officers chatted for roughly twenty minutes until Ensign Flores stood up then said, “Let me do some of your tasks. I can see that you are still weak from your recent illness. Before I came to your cabin, I discussed you with the Captain. He said I could help you out as long as it did not interfere with my job.”

“Absolutely not,” Ensign Ramsey said.

“Listen Ensign Ramsey,” Ensign Flores said to her, “its not easy to be a receiver, I know, but me the opportunity to be a giver. Don’t you thinks it’s good idea for you to let God bless me with blessing of being one? I’m not asking for your soul or anything like that! How about it? Okay.”

Ensign Flores was right! A giver needs a receiver. Will you be a Godly one should the need arise?
