Family
Everybody knows prices have gone out of sight. Every time somebody wants a raise the boss has to raise prices. He could never be expected to cut into his profits to keep an employee happy, for pity sakes.
For a lot of us on fixed incomes or handicapped for whatever reason we would like to at least visit the funeral home and commiserate with the deceased’s family but that isn’t always possible. The same is true for getting down town to get a card at three or four dollars a plop, and you might as well say an additional fifty cents to mail it. Do any of my readers remember when you could buy a beautiful card for under a dollar and it only cost three cents to mail it? What makes the whole scenario so untenable? Our fixed income.
So I would like to make this prayerful suggestion. I am going to give you two alternatives to the traditional sympathy card. All it takes is a computer (if your handwriting has gone south like mine) or pretty note paper or even a tablet. It’s the thought behind the gesture that will warm the cockles of the heart to someone you express the sympathy.
The first one Miss Me - But Let Me Go” I have used often since being given it by a friend whose wife died and it was read at her funeral. The second one “The Last Mile of the Way” was in my home church’s newsletter for this month.
MISS ME – BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss Me A Little – But Not Too Long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the Love that we once shared
Miss Me – But Let Me Go!
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone
It’s all part of the Master’s Plan
a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrow in doing good deeds.
Miss Me – But Let Me Go.
The Last Mile of the Way
By Johnson Oatman, Jr. and Wm Edie Marks
If I walk in the pathway of duty,
If I work till the close of the day;
I shall see the great King in His beauty,
When I’ve gone the last mile of the way.
If for Christ I proclaim the glad story
If I seek for His sheep gone astray
I am sure He will show me His glory
When I’ve gone the last mile of the way.
Here the dearest ties we must sever
Tears of sorrow are seen every day.
No sickness, or sighing forever
When I’ve gone the last mile of the way.
And if here I have earnestly striven,
And have tried all of His will to obey,
Twill enhance all the rapture of heaven
When I’ve gone the last mile of the way.
I would suggest, again prayerfully, that you will not only make the deceased’s family feel better, you yourself will have found it is easier for you to have found a way to keep up the traditions you have always kept without
the financial and/or physical stress.
