Larry Lilly's Letter Friday March 28, 2008

On Tuesday I went to a gala reception/book launch for the new book, "It's A Mighty Thin Pancake That Don't Have Two Sides" by Indiana's own Rexford C. Early. The book is published by New Century Publishing. During the meeting I was able to renew several old acquaintances and noticed several desperately pretending they did not recognize me. I enjoyed that. When I asked Rex to sign a few books, he looked at me, I hadn't seen him for 20 years, and said, "How in the world are you doing?" He stopped signing books and we talked for a few minutes, he introduced himself to my son, and being assured that Jon was not a liberal democrat, congratulated me on raising such a fine man. It took me a few minutes to note that the vivacious woman sitting next to Rex was Barbara, the wife of his youth and not a daughter that I had failed to meet in years gone by. I suppose staying young is Barbara's way of coping with life with Rex.

Yesterday, Thursday, I heard giggling and then an outright belly laugh, and rushing from my corner of our living room, now functioning as my temporary office, into the dining area, there sat the Great Blonde, her queenly air was gone and she was roaring. I asked, "Sweetie, what on earth is going on?" She could not stop laughing, so she held Rex's book and pointed to a page and with the language of the Hearing Challenged led me to read a passage about how Rexford got his first name from a man who turned out to be Communist who wore light loafers. You have to read the story the way Rex tells it. Joyce, The Great Blonde, is reviewing the book.

On the review Joyce said, "Larry, Rex must be very religious for he sure knows many religious words, though he has a strong tendency to use them out of context." She also mentioned his 19 rules for living well, long and at peace in the political arena. I know hundreds of preachers who would find fault with Rex's out of context use of religious words, yet these clergypersons could learn a lot about life by simply implementing the 19 Rules of Politics into their daily life. Number 7 is classic, "Don't try to be real humble. You probably ain't that great." Food for thought for the peacock preachers.

On the subject of "coveting your neighbor's wife" Rex translates this vital commandment into his Hoosier tongue and gets the attention of real sinners this way in Rule 3, "Don't ever monkey with another monkey's monkey." Just think of the ramifications if Moses had put this commandment in the vernacular of Sir Rex! Rule 10 is one rule that endears Rex and people like him to my old Indian/German heart. Dave Caswell at New Century is publishing my book on the subject. It is a simple, little used rule that separates the real from the false and as you read Rex's book, you see that he practices the rule, even to delivering an old friend to the penitentiary door and visiting the man over the brief time of his imprisonment. Rule 10 should become a banner for Christians especially, and for men and women who desire to live a more meaningful life.

Rule #10 "Don't trade old friends for new ones."

I sure hope that Rex doesn't take offense at my little wife thinking he must be very religious. She means well.
