The sunlight streamed in through the windows, spilling onto the hardwood floor making it appear shiny and glossy, and lighting the dark places in the room where the shadows had spent the night. In the distance I heard singing, “Heavenly sunshine, heavenly sunshine; Halleluiah, Jesus is mine.” I smiled contentedly, knowing that it was going to be a good day.

Growing up in Alaska where there is darkness for much of the winter (about eight months), and light is almost constant in the summer (about two months); I have a different kind of appreciation for light. I remember seeing people go into depression-like states during the winter and come out of them during the summer – usually then becoming irritable for lack of sleep because of the light. As a kid, I remember dragging through the darkness of winter, then living in and enjoying the light of summer. Although I don't especially like the following comparison, I'll make it anyway; we acted like bears, hibernating all winter and fishing and playing all summer.

Now that my family has moved to the Midwest, I have found myself missing the constant light of summer. As I become more disabled, my eyes have more difficulty making the necessary adjustments for sight from the light of the sun. I realize that through that occurrence I am being reminded of the difference between sunlight and the Son's Light. Jesus (the Son of God and the Son of Man) says, in John 8:12 (NIV), '"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."' The light that really matters is not from the sun but from the Son. His Light is constant and everlasting. The apostle John describes the Heavenly Light in Revelation 21:23(NIV), "The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp."
