You Too Are A Winner!

While on the Indiana University—Bloomington campus, Sister Rita Clare, accompanied by another member of the Scecina Memorial High School faculty, stated: “I have always had the best most wonderful students to pass through my classroom!” Sister made this proclamation with no hesitation or reservation. At the time, I had been two years removed from her English Grammar and Composition class.

“What made we students so wonderful?” I asked her.

“I would treat students with dignity and respect; give them an honest assessment of their work; offer to help those needing it; be firm but fair to all; treat each gain they made in their work no matter how small as a success; allow each student to discover for themselves what he or she enjoyed doing; and encouraged them to develop their God-given talent or talents to the very best of their ability.

No two students I have had were ever alike. However, every student needed to be encouraged to become a winner in the arena of life. History is full of successful men and women who were helped along to success by a teacher. One such person was the Indiana poet/writer, James Whitcomb Riley. James Whitcomb Riley was, by his own admission, a horrible failure until one of his teachers noticed his literary talents, encouraged him to continue writing and treated him like a winner devoting the time and energy it would take to fulfill his skills and his destiny.”

Do you know a boy or girl, man or woman who could use some encouragement from you this day?” Or are you discouraged by the enormity of the world problems? How about yourself? You know, all of us, we humans, are God’s “winners” created with special talents just waiting to be released and developed. It has been said: “God makes no junk”. No one old or young, fat or thin, female or male are the least in this universe of God!!!
