More than a Glass of Water
“He replied, “If you only knew what a wonderful gift God has for you, and who I am you would ask me for some living water!” John 4:10
I had the opportunity recently to view a memorial service for a man named Jake. I knew Jake and his family. Jake had been a minister and had retired. At the memorial service another pastor was one of the first to speak. He spoke of a time when he was on top of the world. He had a large church, one that was televised on Sundays. If you stayed home from church that is who you watched. Everything was going his way. Through a set of circumstances he lost his job, his church, friends abandoned him, and church officials were no longer ones he could count on. One day he opened the door and there was Jake. He went on to speak about how Jake stayed with him and was a friend to him when he had lost everything. He spoke very eloquently of Jake. As a final remark he told that if he had been given the opportunity to witness before God about Jake there is only one thing he would do that would describe Jake. He would take a glass of water, hold it up to God and say nothing. Powerful image, huh?
Now when I was watching this I was in the middle of influenza and taking medicine. My mind was a bit fuzzy. All week I kept thinking about this image. What does holding a glass of water imply? On Saturday morning my mind cleared and it hit. When it hit, I thought, "Wow, that was powerful!". God speaks to us throughout the Bible telling us He is the living water. He is the only way to eternal life. If we come to Him and drink His water we will thirst no more. When this man had lost everything Jake was there to remind Him God was still there. Everyone else abandoned him in his time of need, but it was Jake that offered God to him. When we have nothing left we still have God. When there is no hope, we still have hope in God and in eternal life. God will never leave or forsake us. The second part of Hebrews 13:5 says,”…for He Himself has said, ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you’.” What Jake was doing was offering to walk alongside this man, to be there for him, to remind him, God had not abandoned him. God couldn’t be there so he sent Jake. Jake represented God offering this man living water; hope for a better tomorrow; hope in eternal life.
Once again I thought about myself. Do I offer others living water? Do I offer to walk alongside of them when they have no hope left, or do I follow the crowd and abandon people? How do I respond? How would I want others to respond to me? It is one thing to talk faith, but it is quite another to offer faith to others when their world is in turmoil. A glass of water will never mean the same to me. The next time I see a glass of water I will think of Jake and realize even in his death, He showed others how to live for God. What a powerful statement about one man’s life.
What do you offer people? I hope you can offer them a glass of water. I also hope you are willing to accept that glass of water when it is offered to you. God bless Jake!
In Christian love,
Becky
