Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday March 4, 2008

During the course of my near the allotted biblical span of three score and ten life, I have watched in wonder as what I used to call the "good people" meaning Christians, as when I was young I knew little to nothing about, blindly permitted those of an agnostic perspective to gradually steal the thunder of the notion of America being a Christian nation. This drama played out daily in our Public Schools.

Until I reached the age of 20 I could have cared less about what ideological whim drove the curriculum at any level of education. And then Christ became the driving person in my life and my eyes were opened to what was going on in our country. I spent many a long night wondering why Christians failed to simply rise up and take control of the school boards through the grand American weapon, the voting booth. Such a simple solution was not to be as the mass of the marching Christian Soldiers, marched out of the fray and into their four walled churches in retreat attempting to build a counter culture oriented educational system. A few Christians attempted to run for the school board and in the early days of the current battle were in fact the salt Jesus taught about. And then, and then the Fed began to warn of withholding Federal Funds if any district failed to teach such and such and it was utterly amazing at just how swiftly the local school boards whether populated by Christian Warriors or outright atheists fell into step and the quality of education took a downward turn. Your favorite News outlet will opine along the same lines, though at the core I am not on their page.

The average American believes the purpose of public education is the teaching of children whose brains are still in the oatmeal stage to read and write. If this is the purpose, again any News outlet is swift to point out the failure. It is past time to discover that mere readin, ritin and rithmatic is not what public or any form of education is all about. I recall as a brilliant radical third grader being sent to the Grand Potentate, principal, for assuring, rather vociferously, my teacher that the three "R's" was a goofy way of describing education and it was teaching most oatmeal brain children to spell the words incorrectly. The principal failed to see my great wisdom on this issue, but he did give me a lesson on the use of a table tennis paddle. He had very good wrist action.

For a few years many Christians huddled in their homes and found comfort in the truth that they, the salt of the earth could and would counter the Atheistic influence with a commitment to more intense devotions in the home. This soon lapsed back to normal Sunday morning religion and the pulpit has become by and large a place to hear soothing stories of by gone times, with pastors basically quiet about the Horse of Troy inside the gates via the books carried home each day by little Johnny with instructions on how to safely engage in perverted lifestyles.

Thus our schools no longer reflect the mores of our local community, but those of Washington, DC. May God help us, but for this to happen we must exchange greed for God.

"Education is a weapon, whose effects depend on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed."
