Larry Lilly's Letter February 15, 2008

As The Great Blonde surfed through all the "News" channels hungrily watching each news bite about the primaries, hoping to catch some tid bit missed by the other news hucksters, I thought of a verse of scripture and longed for this coming November when all will return to normal, and millions of God fearing, loyal to their party Americans, would long for another November to get even for being let down by the one in whom they placed their hopes and dreams for a return to America that never was outside of minds and hearts. I heard a village idiot the other day vociferously pining away for a return to the morals of General Washington.

As I suffered through this I was comforted by two things, one being the controversy over Roger Clemons and I was intrigued by the high flood stage emotions on both sides of the story. I must admit to a bias as having been responsible for many employees over the years, I tend to take a box of salt with accusations from "former" employees. And then God in His mercy brought a verse to mind as the Great Blonde American turned to yet another channel to see the image of Mrs. Clinton again shedding a tear for those who suffer.

The verse in part: Luke 16:23

"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments,"

Could it be that hell consists of all the terrible things the Bible says plus a continuous political primary campaign?

Most people who profess to believe in hell, do not really do so as was shown in an old Seinfeld program brought to my attention by Dan Kimball. In the story line Elaine's boyfriend, Puddy, (I assume that's what he was in her arms) becomes a Christian. He starts listening to Christian music and begins badgering Elaine about going to hell. At one point he asks Elaine to steal the neighbor's newspaper for him because she's the one going to hell, so she might as well steal it. Elaine explodes, starts whacking him with the newspaper and screams, "If I am going to hell, you should care that I"m going to hell."

As I peruse the various literature from many mainline, evangelical and even fundamental sources I wonder, "Doe's anyone even care anymore?"

Most programs designed to "attract the lost" in reality are more geared to make the already "warm and fuzzy" feel even more so. Is the world beating us half to death with "stolen newspapers" in utter exasperation because we should care; if for no other reason than that we believe they are going to hell?

Christ used the most graphic images available to be used with understanding in the minds of the people of His day to warn of the wrath to come. Why is it that the professing community as a whole fails to care? Why DO we spend more money on dog food than on outreach mission projects? Is the entire unchurched world in an "Elaine" frenzy of outrage at our lack of concern?
