Marriage is a Good Thing, a Very Good Thing

1 Corinthians 7:2 (NIV) says, “But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.” The Apostle Paul realized that marriage between one man and one woman was the best way for both participants to refrain from sinful desires and temptations. Just as Adam and Eve were helpmates in the Garden of Eden, married couples in the modern day world can become partners in dedication to the Lord that has blessed their union.

1 Corinthians 7:3 (NIV) continues: “The husband should fulfill his marital duties to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.” The bond between a husband and wife becomes greater when mutual respect, trust, and commitment grow. A husband should not ignore the needs, hopes, and dreams of his beloved wife. And the wife must be firm in her want to make the sanctity of marriage the cornerstone of her household.

1 Corinthians 7:5 (NIV) makes it clear who hates a strong marriage: “Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourself to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” The married couple that remains faithful to each other mirrors God’s faithfulness to His followers. Satan wants to see husbands and wives fall away from their partnership before God. Anything God’s disciples, like Paul, believed holy and just is despised by the enemy of all that is good. No married Christian should ever doubt that Satan and the fallen angels that make up his army rejoice when matrimony crumbles.

Marriage is a good thing, a very good thing. One man and one woman working together throughout the days, years, and decades set before them, this is what makes life on earth remain a reflection of what our Heavenly destination holds in store for us. A man’s love for his wife and a woman’s love for her husband mimic the love God has for His creation and the sincere efforts of mankind to return that love.

Married couples should rejoice at the fact that Satan hates the integrity of marriage. He wants men and women to see lust, envy, and debauchery as legitimate forms of self-gratification, but followers of the Bible will see through Satan’s lies and pitfalls. We will embrace ageless words of wisdom, treating marriage as a spiritual shield from sin, and a way to experience life more abundantly rewarding. Marriage allows a man and a woman to work together as the story of their life progresses.

God does not want His creation to wander in the wilderness of insecurity and self-loathing. Nor does He want His children to be denied personal gratification in their current home. Heaven may be just around the corner, but nothing provides a glimpse of our future home quite like the bond of a strong and committed marriage here on earth.
