Prayer in Power

Okay, I admit it. I was
not expecting much when a friend told me about a prayer group in South Paris, but something made me want to follow the lead anyway. Still, being South Paris, I didn't think much was happening. As I walked up to the doors of the little apartment complex where the prayer group met. I thought about its quaint, simple appearance.
It looked like a fitting place for a nice, quiet little prayer meeting.

The moment I felt, or more to the point, heard, a different presence in that room. As I entered their chosen meeting place, I stood in the doorway almost afraid to disturb the Holy Spirit by making the people aware of my presence. They sang songs of praise to God. Worship style did not seem to matter. They sang everything from classic old hymns like "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" to Christian rock like Kutless’s "Strong Tower." When the singing ended, I walked up to the table introduced myself and asked if I could have a seat. Corrina-Dawn Madison, whom I quickly learned was the group leader, pulled out the chair next to hers, and I sat down. "What are you all praying for?" I asked.

"Our government and the church," Corrina-Dawn answered.

"You're praying for more godly laws," I said.

"Yes, that,’ and a lot more." She said. She talked about some stuff that might be considered typical for Christians like ending abortion and praying for the lawmakers to turn to God, but she added to that issues such as fighting for programs that help the poor and needy and praying about ways we as Christians could do so.

"A lot of churches already do that," I said.

She looked me straight in the eye and said, "We don't intend to stop there. We're bringing the gospel with us. From what I understand, a lot of churches either share the gospel or help out where people live. As the Lord leads, we intend to do both."

"And besides seeking the Lord's will, where does prayer come in?" I asked.

"We believe prayer changes situations and people—perhaps our leaders most of all," she said.

I remembered something in Proverbs 29 about God and the hearts of kings, but I never it connected it with prayer.

That thought was barely out of my mind, when she said, "I believe God wants groups like this in every city and town in the nation. And that's my goal."

"I hope it works the out," I said.

"It's what God wants," Corrina-Dawn said with a grin on her face and the glimmer in her eyes.

I shook her hand and left the room thinking of the old saying, "Good things come in small packages." Then I wondered whether the same was true of small towns. It sure is if you're talking about a small group of humans with a very large God-given vision.
