Monday morning.

I pull up the shade on another dull grey morning. It’s going to rain again. Not the soft refreshing rain of spring, but a damp, bone-chilling winter rain. It’s been this way for several days and there is no indication that it will end soon.

Before I turn away from the window I see on the very edge of the horizon, just for a very few minutes the pink/purple tinge of the promise of sunlight.

Later when I look, it’s grey again. The glimpse of brighter days is gone. Will these dark, dreary days never end?

But this time I don’t turn away. I look at the horizon and see only grey. The stark wintery scene before me is the same as it’s been. Except…now I’m beginning to really see. I smile and thank the Lord for His insight.

God’s beauty, warmth and presence is always there. Even when it’s been so long since we’ve seen sunshine.

And when it’s darkest, in His grace and mercy, He gives us that glimpse as a reminder.

He is there. Through dreary grey days; through long dark nights; through all the troubles and uncertainties that beset us as humans, God is there. He has promised, “...I am with you always..." (Matt. 28:20 NIV).

So at sunrise, pull up the shade and look to the horizon for His promise of sunlight.
