Grief

I didn’t realise
you could grieve someone
who was not yet dead
even one whose demise was
nowhere near apparent

Yet here I am
feeling the heartache of loss
with tears streaming

My friends have left
just upped and gone
across the ocean
that deep and dark void

And the watery void
seeps in and fills my soul
for I am grieving them

The rain falls down
and I cry
the tears are streaming

I think of another
the one who bore me
all those years ago

I mourn the life
she should have had
one without struggle and pain

I grieve for the illness that
takes her mind
and I know there is no turning back

I think of the day she will look at me
with no recognition
and I grieve

I grieve the time I don’t spend with her
and I dread the time that I will

It rains and so do I
‘Jesus wept’ so I know it’s okay
to cry and mourn

But I keep my tears in, just in case
only letting them overflow
in the privacy of the car
or the darkened room

and I wait for morning
