A Personal Perspective On The Trinity

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?

That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?

This song, this Christmas has brought a new perspective to my relationship with Jesus. Often I fail to make that fluid connection to the Godhead, the Trinity that I need to, too truly understand my Christian walk, too truly understand the Creator of All. I often segregate God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit into a set of roles, separate boxes calling to one but not the other, calling upon whomever seems right or proper at the time for prayer, praise or worship.

The two places I seem to lose this connection to the Trinity, is at the birth of Jesus and again at His death and resurrection. The idea that God became flesh in the form of a baby, and that he would live in human form to be tortured and crucified for our sins is a connection I have not always made. I tend to see the flesh of Jesus rather then persona of Jesus. It is not that I haven’t heard this perspective before, but it is the first time I have felt this perspective.

This has been a difficult year, a year filled with challenges and disappointments. It has been a year where God has been trying to get through to me in a more profound and visceral way. God is hard at work changing me, changing the very core of who I am, and the pain of those changes is often hard to bear, sometimes His work hardly seems worth the effort.

I watched the film The Nativity Story on Christmas Day and I wondered what was in the minds of Mary and Joseph as they made their way to Bethlehem, as they contemplated the birth of mankind’s Saviour. As I watched the film I wondered at their courage as they willingly gave up everything to give birth, parent and protect Jesus, to deliver the child whom would one day deliver them. Did they understand the full impact and cost of their decision? Where did they find the courage? I wondered if I could ever be that courageous.

Although I have made quite a few resolutions for 2008, the overarching goal for me this coming year will be to truly submit to God in all things. To let go of what I think is important and to take up what Jesus thinks is important. To stop making those intellectual connections to Christ and to start making that heart connections to Christ.
