I really did not know Him then;
I never even cared;
I did not think to contemplate,
when I was in despair.

It did not make a difference for
I fell into His love.
And He filled me with His righteousness,
which comes only from above.

He came, as I remember,
when I was wallowing in regret.
He gave me love, peace, joy,
and His presence, I'll not forget.

The darkness fought and resisted Him,
but to no avail,
for He came to me with the power of love
that purely did prevail.

His words poured out like the brightest light
shining from above.
This was how I met Him.
My Hero, my Lord, my Love.

He came reckless as the ocean
in a hurricane one hour,
to thwart my adversary
with His everlasting power.

The darkness held me firmly,
but give me up it did,
when His loving kindness met me
only to forgive.

His Spirit touched me daily,
without it, I could not survive.
I find I'm ever thankful now
just to be alive.

One night He touched me on my side
and asked, "Why do you love Me"?
I found I could not answer
for it was Him, Him who held me.

Yes! love alone made the difference
and in me a quest was born.
To seek Him out, to hunger and thirst
to understand the thorns.

He didn't have to do it,
He didn't have to care,
but He showed up with His saving grace
and filled me then and there.

And just when I thought that I understood
everything about His grace,
He lifted me by His Spirit and
revealed a higher place.

He asked me to invest myself
and commit to His kindness too?
to share His faith, hope, and love,
showered on others, as their due.

I did not know how to tell it
with words I could not say,
until He gave to me this poem
on one bright and sunny day.

No, He didn't have to do it,
He didn't have to care,
but because He is so gracious
He had these words to spare.
