Behold,
the fire and the wood;
but where is the lamb
for a burnt offering?

"Lord?"

"What is it, My child?"

"Who were the Three Wise Men?
I don't understand."

"They saw the Star
and brought gifts."

"Yeah, I know.
But, I don't understand;
WHY did they bring gifts?
And, how come nobody ELSE
saw the Star? Whenever
there's a comet, nowadays,
the whole world knows about it."

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"Ya know; if there was
REALLY such a big star in
the sky, wouldn't everybody
be outside, lookin' at it?
I mean, how come folks
weren't at the market,
the next day, sayin':

'Wow! Did you see
that STAR, last night?'
'Yeah! Did YOU see that?'
'Hey! What are you guys
talkin' about? Oh, that
STAR? Yeah, that was
WEIRD!'

.....'Ya know, Lord, somethin'
like that."

"Read My Word, child."

"I HAVE, Lord!
I can't FIND IT!
The Part about the
Wise MEN!
I've even looked up
FRANKINCENSE!
Maybe, it's just folkLORE!"

"Look, child."

"Oh. Uh, here it is, Lord.
I found it under MYRRH:

Wise men came from the
East to Jersulem saying,
Where is He
Who has been born King
of the Jews?
For we have seen His Star
in the East,
and have come to worship Him.
[Matthew 2:1-2]"

[NOD.]

"When I was a little Jewish
kid, Lord, I thought Christmas
was a pretty picture on a card."

[NOD.]

"I thought Mary was really pretty,
and that she had a little Baby.
And, that there was a lot of
singing at the church, down the
street."

[NOD.]

"Nobody told me it had anything
to do with Easter."

"Yes, child."

"I grew up in the '60's with
3 channels on black n' white
TV. Easter was a Sunday, in
April, when the little Gentile
kids got pretty baskets of
green plastic and chocolate
bunnies. Sometimes, they
gave me one, too."

"I know, child."

"Now, I think the Story of
Christmas started a whole
lot earlier: with that
story about Abraham."

"Which one, My beloved?"

"You know, Lord;
the one where he's told
to take his son up to that
mountain."

"And?"

"And, uh, You know: to SACRIFICE
him!"

[NOD.]
"Then what happened, My precious?"

"Well.......then, eh.....
'Ya know, Lord;
Your angel told him to
stop."

"Why, child?"

"Eh, because You had
provided a substitute?"

[NOD.]

...Abraham lifted up his eyes,
and looked,
and behold,
behind him was a ram,
caught in a thicket by his horns......
So Abraham called the name
of that place,
'The Lord will Provide'.
[Genesis 22:13-14]
