There once was a little evergreen tree
Growing deep within the woods
Green and full - so picturesque was he
Yet, alone and forlorn he stood

All the other trees were sleeping sound
Had shed their leaves for winter
With their branches bare of any green
Shown only were their splinters

“Why do I live through this bitter cold
Why can’t I go to sleep like these?”
He cried “Oh God, why must I endure
Through the bitter sub-zero degrees?

Howling through this dark, black forest
Cold winds which strain my branches!
The heavy snow weighs me down
Tis’ a bitter life barren of chances!

What is my purpose in this dark forest?
My life is merely a bad joke!
Why did you make me a Douglas fir?
Instead of an Elm or a stately Oak?”

“I know the plans I have for you!”
The Lord replied in a thunder
“To give you a future and a hope
And I have never made a blunder!

Just trust in Me, my pretty little tree
When you are feeling down
If you call out My name in humility
And truly search, I’ll be found.”

The little tree was feeling somewhat better
When at once he heard some voices
Children laughing with their Mom and Dad
Talking loudly about choices

“Oh look Daddy!” a little girl cried out
There’s a beautiful Christmas tree!
Can we take him home and decorate him
He’s the perfect one, you see!”

The little fir tree has a purpose now
His lights sure twinkle and shine!
A nativity scene sits beneath him
To remind him of the time.....

When he was planted in the lonely forest
Before the Lord showed him grace
Now the purest freedom, hope and love
He found in the Savior’s sweet face.
