The Age of Emptiness

There have always been descriptions for a particular time in history. We had the Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression years of the thirties, the Holocaust in the forties, the fifties brought in the Rock n Roll Era and the sixties have been referenced to as the Psychedelic Sixties…..and on it goes.

I remember Christmas time as a child growing up in the late fifties/early sixties. It was always a grand celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Sure, as I grew up I started to realize that not everybody celebrated the birth of Jesus in the same way - but still the majority of the people in America did. And the majority always wins, right?

What has happened to our culture? What has happened to Christmas? What will Christmas be like twenty years from now? And what will history say about the years of 2000 - 2010? Scary thoughts, huh?

It was the year 2007 nearing Christmas-time
Peace on earth was almost impossible to find
Goodwill toward men - just an ancient saying
Nowhere to be found; families kneeling, praying

Advertisements on the hellavision going non-stop
Purchase the latest gadget! Shop till you drop!
Where’s the Spirit of Christmas in all of this?
I see nothing of Christ, only hollow emptiness

Emptiness in the eyes of people running to and fro
What are we doing!? America, do we really know?
This is not Christmas! This is madness, I say!
We’re teaching our children it’s all about play

It’s the Age of Emptiness, in this plentiful land
A Christmas without Jesus? I just don’t understand…..
He is the only reason for the Christmas season at all!
Without Jesus there’s no joy, just a crowded shopping mall…..
