Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday December 6, 2007

On Friday, December 7th I will join several other authors for a book signing at New Century Publishers on 36 E. Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN from 10AM to 4PM. It should be a good time, and you will have the opportunity to meet several authors besides me. The signing is to be held in the atrium of the New Century building.

Why do I take space in my letter to tell this astounding news to you? Because I think that if you live in this region it would contribute to your mental, spiritual and educational growth to be in such company. And any time a person grows as a result of being around others who are growth catalysts, the catalyst also experiences growth, and God knows I need growth, in about any area you can think of or imagine! At least this is the expressed thought of Joyce, the wife of my youth, and certainly not a slouch in things intellectual.

The president of New Century Publishing will be buzzing around doing all things possible to make each visitor feel as though they are the only person in the universe. He is good at this, says he learned this art when interviewing Garrison Keillor, the country boy from Lake Wobegon. Dave gets around.

The first book signing I ever attended, other than the ones where people gather around the preacher and pretend he is God, was at a book signing in 2005 at New Century for the signing of a cook book by the governor's wife, a truly lovely girl. Joyce was with me and we thoroughly enjoyed the people, the ambience and the coffee. The coffee is provided by New Century for as yet unrecognized great writers have to live somehow and free coffee goes a long way toward keeping body and soul together. Tea is also available for the more timid souls.

If you have aspirations of writing the truly great American novel, please do not come expecting to tell the authors about this as we have the same quest locked in the inner sanctum of hearts. And the publisher would simply love to publish such a tome, but he would prefer a very short sample of your work, properly prepared for the editor. If you do not know the how of this presentation form, check a book out at the Library and then proceed. Later, when the editor lays eyes on your properly prepared page, you will be told, that they, the editor uses the form from another book. I will not share in this piece where the editor told me to take one of my articles.

Actually you could consider bringing the little woman along and then, if you have any money left, you and your dear one could take a short jaunt west to Circle City Mall and shop til you drop. And if several of you my cherished readers do this, each author will have earned enough gas money to get home. Everyone benefits, this is the Christian way of doing things.

Certainly the sidewalks of Indianapolis are dressed in Holiday Style and you and the spouse will walk along the sidewalks and fall in love all over again, perhaps even wonder why you do not just go ahead and bring a few more crumb snatchers into the world, for after all, little children are what Christmas is all about. Yep, a book signing can and should be a wonderful thing.
