I was in church last Sunday, in the balcony where I usually sit, and there was a couple in front of me with a beautiful little 10 month old boy. He was fine for awhile, then, as happens at that age, he started getting fidgety and wouldn’t stop. His dad held him, and he kept clawing for his mom’s earrings. Of course, that wouldn’t do, but eventually she held him, and he quieted down almost instantly… Something had caught those big, wide eyes of his.

He stopped fidgeting. Like you’d flipped a switch, he stopped.

He kept staring at something over my left shoulder. As soon as he looked at something else, he’d start fidgeting again.

He stared again.

Silence.

More fidgeting.

Then he stared again – only this time, far more intently – and with laser like precision.

And there was silence, and peace, and a comfort more profound than any I’d experienced in a long time.

I had no idea what was behind me that held so much power, so I followed his gaze, to find that when he was calm, when he was quiet, when all was at rest, he was looking at the stained glass image of Jesus behind me.

And when there was comfort, profound comfort, he wasn’t looking at Jesus. He was looking at the lamb that Jesus was holding, just like he was being held.

He understood the peace the Lamb felt.

It shone in his eyes, as he kept his eyes, on Jesus.
