“And now let us take” the vicar intoned
“A moment of silence to pray,
To quieten our minds, be open to God
And rest at the end of the day.”

My thoughts were a shambles, my mind in a whirl,
So cluttered with noise from within,
Those things I had done, and still had to do,
Were setting my head in a spin.
I struggled and fought to let them all go,
Allowing the peace to come in.

A candle was lit, we all settled down
The tensions all melted away;
Our bodies relaxed, minds quietened and stilled
From pressures built during the day.

I then became conscious of sounds all around,
The sounds that the silence can bring,
A dove in the rafters, the sough of the wind,
The gentle rhythm of breathing;
And in the distance from fields all around,
Heard lambs in the new life of spring.

It was just a moment, but how it was filled,
With peace which was not of this world;
The worries, the tensions and pressures of life
Were slowly and gently unfurled.

And so I’m resolved that no matter what comes,
Whether at work or at play,
To quieten my mind, be open to God
And rest at the end of the day
