Larry Lilly's Letter Saturday November 3, 2007 For Writers Only

Today's tidbit concerns a mysterious writer by the name of D. William Hoosier. D is a cowboy among other things and has written a moving article for New Centuries anthology, Inspiration From The Heartland. Years ago I learned the art of evaluating the inner working of people based on their use of verbiage and the general drift of stories they write. Hemingway's manner of departure from this planet was clearly predictable and came as no surprise, in spite of great sadness on my part. You always hope you are wrong. But in D's piece I see a clear case of multiple personalities along the line of 3 Faces of Eve. I hope I am wrong. I will say that though I clearly identified at least three D's, each is fascinating in its own right and the article’s inspiration does not bleed through, it rushes Niagara like from each page. Read his piece and you will see what I mean.

Mr. Hoosier seems to have some aversion to meeting with other writers, who with one mind hope to help make the Anthology a huge success as these stories need to be read by the masses. In fairness to D, I must add that multiple personality types often suffer as they attempt to decide which personality to send to a meeting. Usually refreshments are limited and thus the publisher will not pay for more than one personality per person. Most writers have suffered long with a lack of money, so when and if we lay hands of the coin of the realm we tend to resemble drunken sailors more than the erudite men and women we were when we picked up the quill to tell the very important thoughts, feelings and captivating tales we carry in our hearts.

The personalities Mr. Hoosier reveals in his story are enthusiastic, well read, and articulate. Each would add a little life to our writer's gathering as they are often blah. I contribute an immense blah myself, but then people in my chosen profession are notorious for putting people into a coma like sleep. Several of the writers in our anthology should consider the ministry. Mr. Hoosier is not one of them as he would be interesting enough to keep the folks wide awake and they then know what their particular religious group teaches and it could scare them to death. I know I tune out a lot of speakers when they get off on a tangent that is not in harmony with my well thought out and correct theology. I have slept though many an afternoon defense of the faith conference. As I said, D. William Hoosier and his cadre of personalities would add spark to meetings.

Having said this, I must share a few of my thoughts on the content and its value to you, the mono-personality reader. And yes, it is much easier to write with the mono in mind as it is possible to connect with only one personality at a time.

The hero of Nothing to Fear, Lee Roy Williams, a grizzled old cowboy embodies and reveals the deep seated conflict in Mr. Hoosier. Lee was given to him by his father, a Confederate survivor in honor of the gallant Robert E. Lee. I suppose Roy is the middle name of D's character in recollection of Roy Rogers who always shook the female's hand and kissed the horse. He played an old guitar and strummed it as he rode across the vast prairies of the west. More than a little is mentioned as Lee invests an enormous amount of emotion, time and money into saving Mustangs. This is certainly a noble undertaking and should be emulated by others. One thing about this operation literally leaps off the page as the old cowboy calls these havens of mercy, Mustang Ranch. D, in my opinion avoids the state of Nevada, but he inadvertently gives pause to a few thoughts as to just why he avoids even the mention of the state where "What happens here stays here."

Due to the limits of space, I will continue on Monday with an article on the moving, powerful and thought provoking story by D. William Hoosier now old himself and Nothing to Fear could well be his last shot at telling the fascinating story that has formed and germinated in his heart.
