The Keys

Jan 3, 2007
By: Rick L. King

What are keys for? If we have a set of keys, we usually put them into a lock and open something that was shut. Keys have no value if they are not used. Jesus gave keys to the Church. What is the Church doing with them? Are they being used, or are they just tucked away somewhere accomplishing nothing.

Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Key-since the keeper of the keys has the power to open and to shut, denotes power and authority of various kinds (OLB Greek Lexicon Translation)

Kingdom of Heaven-royal power, kingship, dominion, rule
1a) not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom
1b) of the royal power of Jesus as the triumphant Messiah
1c) of the royal power and dignity conferred on Christians in the Messiah’s kingdom
2) a kingdom, the territory subject to the rule of a king

Bind-to bind tie, fasten
1a) to bind, fasten with chains, to throw into chains
1b2) to bind, put under obligation, of the law, duty etc.
1b3) to forbid, prohibit, declare to be illicit

Loose-to loose any person (or thing) tied or fastened
2) to loose one bound, i.e. to unbind, release from bonds, set free
2b) bound with chains (a prisoner), discharge from prison, let go

Dominion--rule, reign, power
1) to rule, have dominion, reign
1a) (Qal) to rule, have dominion

Psalms 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

What is the mission of Christ on earth?

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

The kingdom of God is upon us as we cast out devils, heal the sick, preach the gospel. The keys to the kingdom are just this. If we do these things by the Spirit of God, we are doing what Jesus does, opening prison doors, setting at liberty those which are bound, and setting the captives free.

The problem we seem to have is this. Jesus had the keys. He gave them to his church. Much of the church gave them back to the devil. The devil is supposed to be under our feet as Jesus gave to us dominion over all of the earth. We seem to have given the dominion to the devil. Instead of us telling the devil what he can do, the devil has been telling us what to do. He only has power if we give it to him. The key to most of our problems is that we do not take our God given blessings by force. We must learn to stop wrestling against flesh and blood, and start fighting the principalities and powers and the rulers of darkness. It was not God’s design for us to be under satan’s dominion. It is that he should be under our dominion (rule, power, authority). As long as we fight a spiritual war with carnal weapons, we can never win. Unless we use the keys given to us given by Jesus, and fight spiritual battles with spiritual weapons instead of carnal ones, we are in trouble. Look at a few scriptures of our authority through the Holy Spirit:

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Lu 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

What if we had the same number of warriors doing battle in the spirit as we had warring in the flesh in the Mideast; I wonder what result that we would see. Would the power of God destroy our enemies? Realize also our enemy is not man. Our real enemy is the devil. He is behind what is happening. When we use the keys to the kingdom, we will do battle with spiritual forces.
