"Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 45:10

We live in a noisy society, much of it self-inflicted. We are a self-indulgent people: we want more of everything on the table. We talk too much, think too little. We eat too much, exercise too little. We demand constant entertainment; we get bored too easily. Even our leisure time needs quotes around it. Contemplation, quiet time, meditation--forget about it! "Busyness", not business. From what are we distracting ourselves? Of what are we afraid? Perhaps being alone with God is a little scary? Searching our own hearts, looking inside ourselves: are we uneasy about what we will find? Perhaps it would be profitable for us to actually and on purpose, seek quiet time.

There is a story about the prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 19:9-19. The old prophet was hiding in a cave after his run-in with Jezebel. But God knew where he was and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" Elijah told Him he had been very zealous for the Israelites, but they had forsaken God's covenant, and he was the only one left and his life was in danger. God told him to go stand on the crest of the mountain. A strong wind passed, breaking off pieces of the mountain, but the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in it either. After the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not there. But then there was a still, small voice. God told Elijah to go out and find Elisha and anoint him for service, that He had reserved 7,000 Israelites who had not bowed to Baal. Elijah threw his mantle about him and obeyed the instructions that came in a still, small voice. Could it be that we never get past the wind, the earthquake and fire to hear the still, small voice of God? It may not be in the roar of traffic, constant TV, or any other of the distractions of our society.

"Stand in awe, and sin not, commune with your own heart upon your bed and be still." Psalm 4:4

"He leads us beside still waters. He restores our soul." Psalm 23:2,3

In the Classroom of Life, we may have to be a little quieter in order to hear the voice of the Teacher. Sometimes He whispers.
