Almost…………..possibly one of the saddest words in the English language, redolent of failure by a hairsbreadth, missed opportunities, valiant efforts that just weren’t quite enough. “He almost made it….”; “She almost passed, but not quite…..”; “She was almost beautiful….”; “He almost got accepted into college…..”; “You almost made the grade……..” But on the other hand, sometimes it is used in the context of gratitude and wonder for a lucky escape: “He almost died”; “She almost fell”; “He was almost run over by a car………”
Thankfully, it is not a word that can be applied in relation to my life and future with God. Not for me the epitaph “She was almost a Christian, she almost made it to heaven!” I am a Christian and I believe my Lord is saving me. My future is certain, sure and guaranteed – I’m going to spend eternity with Him. The most wonderful part of this is that it doesn’t depend on me, on how nice a person I am or how talented or intelligent, how much effort I put in, how hard I try, what I achieve or don’t achieve. There’s no “almost” in my relationship with God.
When I almost despair
When my life almost has no meaning
You are there
When I am almost tempted
When I nearly fall
You are there
If I almost turn my back
And almost run away
You never will
