This is an era when a thick skin is a definite attribute. The basics of Christianity are being challenged on many fronts. It’s a time for stickability: obstinacy in the cause of Christ. This is a time to be non-politically correct! God surely didn’t save us to win popularity contests.

The ones who challenge Christianity are themselves challenged by the Bible. They don’t like the truth of it. They hate to be made aware of their sin and having to give account for it. They hate to think there is One greater than themselves. So they try to turn off the microscope.

Today we have to be tough, because many would abolish the Bible if they could, and silence those who abide by it. The ten commandments monument in the Alabama courthouse is now removed by Federal order under the guise of separation of church and state. It was probably a constant irritation every day to those who walked in the door. It was a daily reminder that their lifestyle (if it doesn’t measure up to those commandments) is going to be judged by God.

One suspects the protesters who wanted it removed also wanted the magnifying glass taken off their lives. Anyone who lives by those ten commandments would surely not be bothered by such a reminder. The furore over the tablet reflects the times we live in. Forty years ago such a project would not have raised a protest. Those were the days when Hollywood produced the “Ten Commandments” blockbuster movie. Today such a movie wouldn’t even be considered.

So as Christians we have to stick to our spiritual guns. We are not to be swayed by what is trendy, we are not to go with the flow. We must swim against the tide no matter what the personal cost. This is no time to have skin like an eggshell - to be easily hurt, easily discouraged, half-hearted.

The Apostle Paul is probably the greatest example of what it means to have a thick skin. He was stoned, flogged, jailed in the cause of the gospel. No doubt verbally abused as well. Nevertheless he kept going, and that’s what we need to do also to resist satan's attacks.
