Encouragement
Have you ever noticed how these days everything has to be instant? We have instant entertainment at the turn of a switch, for example the television (why, with the remote control we don’t even have to get out of the chair), e-mails, calculators, text messages on our mobile phones, and many other things including foodstuff such as instant coffee and instant potato – just shove it in the microwave, and it will be done in next to no time!
It is as if we don’t have the time, or maybe cannot be bothered, to do these things in a more leisurely and orderly fashion. The trouble is that we are becoming too impatient, and are not prepared to allow things to run their natural course. When a flower grows, for example, it takes time for the bud to open and bloom into a wonderful display of fragrance and colour.
We could, of course, take a hammer to it, and threaten to smash it to a pulp, but it will still develop in it’s own good time – that is the way of nature. And when the body is recovering from an illness or wound, even with the constant attention of skilled doctors and nurses, it is all down to natures healing process before we can declare ourselves fit and well again.
But if we think about it we will see that in this quest for instant satisfaction there is an ever-present danger of missing out on the really important things in life. After all, consider lasting friendships – they don’t come in an instant, but take time to grow and flourish.
Even in the case of those who believe in ‘love at first sight’ it will still take time after the initial mutual attraction, to learn to understand each other, and to accept their strengths and weaknesses, for that love to mould into a close and lasting partnership.
We can so easily get caught up in the frenetic pace of life, and it is so difficult not to be trampled in the stampede. But pause for a moment and consider the fact that the person who benefits most from your patience – is you! One of the most rewarding things we can do is to allow ourselves the time and space to simply relax and take in the beauty that is around us.
This beauty asks nothing more than to be acknowledged and treasured, for when you let yourself experience it, beauty has so much to give back. Serenity does not lie in our circumstances, but in ourselves, for true patience and Peace does not come from without – but within our hearts and minds.
