when He had finished speaking
to Abraham;
and Abraham returned
to his place.

"Lord?"

[SILENCE.]

"How come 'Ya don't
talk to us, like that?"

[SILENCE]

"Ya know what I mean, Lord:
like, in a major conversation?"

[SILENCE]

"Like, when You and he
were just standin' around Abraham's
tent at Mamre?"

"Read It, child."

"Yeah; it's right here:

And the Lord appeared
to him by the oaks of Mamre,
as he sat at the door of his tent
in the heat of the day.
[Genesis 18:1]

Well? How You don't just
SAUNTER up to OUR doors,
like that? That's not FAIR!"

"I do, child."

(silence)

"You don't always let Me in."

"Yeah, but I'm ALWAYS asking
You questions......"

[NOD.]

"Well, I hardly ever HEAR You!"

"You don't listen, My precious."

"Uh, uh. That's not TRUE.
I ask You somethin', and then
I go real quiet...."

"When is that, child."

"Well......SOMETIMES, I do
stop talking!"

[SMILE.]

"You know what I feel like, Lord?"

"What, child."

"Well, back in the 60's,
my friends and I would play
'Ouija Board'."

"Go on."

"Well, the way the game went,
if it was your turn, you'd ask
the board some sort of
question like,
'Am I gonna' get a' A in Geography?';
then the little plastic thing
would start to move (with everybody's
fingers on it) - and end up
on 'YES', 'NO' or 'MAYBE'."

[NOD.]

"Somethin' like that; anyway,
that's often how I feel when
I'm talking to You."

"Ah, I see."

"Sorta' like I'm talkin' to
the ouija board."

"I see, My child.
I am your Ouija Board?"

"Eh, well......not exactly.
(Oops.)
(Oops!)
(Oy.)
(Oy!)
No! Well, what I meant to
say was......"

"Tell Me, precious."

"Eh......I don't know, Lord;
I guess I'm just gonna'
get more of my big foot
in my mouth."

"Which foot, child?"

"Well, let's see;
the right one's a 10 1/2.
I guess THAT one."

[LAUGH.]

"Anyway, Lord;
YOU know what I'm talkin'
about! It's NOT FAIR!"

[PATIENT SILENCE]

"How come You used to talk
to Abraham like......like, he
was some kind'a PAL,
or somethin'? How come
You don't talk to US,
like that? Huh?"

"What am I doing right now, child?"

"Well, yeah. But, I thought
all this was comin' out of
my imagination, Lord.
I mean, I don't think anybody
believes You're really
TALKIN' to me."

[SMILE.]

So the men turned from there,
and went toward Sodom;
but Abraham still stood
before the Lord.
Then Abraham drew near,
and said 'Wilt Thou indeed
destroy the righteous with
the wicked? Suppose there
are fifty righteous within
the city..............?
And the Lord said,
If I find at Sodom fifty
righteous in the city,
I will spare the whole
place for their sake.....
[Genesis 18:22-26]
