When we look back on our lives we often wonder how things have come about. We probably speculate as to what would have happened if we had done something else at a certain time, would our lives now have been totally different. Even such a small thing like turning left when we usually turn right and then bumping into an old friend, or going out to a party when we didn’t really want to go, and meeting someone who eventually becomes important to us. Our lives are full of such instances.

Sometimes it is through our own actions that the direction of our life changes. Consider the couple that decide to move to another district. It may be for financial reasons, or the demands of work, or it may be that they just want a change of scenery. Whether they realise it or not they are about to embark on a great journey – that of starting a new life.

When they move into their new home they will have new neighbours, and when they go to the shops there will be new people there to meet and chat to. They will make new friends through work, through their church, through the children’s school, and through clubs that they will join. Already they are busily engaged in the process of starting all over again – of starting a new life.

Meanwhile, as the human race goes about its business, Mother Nature is hard at work at it’s own rebirth. As spring appears flowers will burst forth, thrusting their heads through the warm soil, to delight us with their display of brilliant colours. As the seasons change and winter approaches these flowers will die away to lie dormant until the following year. The harsh weather of winter brings it’s own hardy plants, and so on through the seasons. It is a perpetual cycle of ebb and flow, of birth and rebirth.

There is an old saying that ‘the only permanent thing in life is change’ and that change will often come whether we want it or not. When it does come, it brings with it it’s own share of successes and failures, beauty and brutality, and it’s joys and it’s sorrows. Yet if we look about us we will see that the world is a source of constant beauty, as much in the simple and abundant things as in the rare and splendid. If we grasp that fact we will ensure that with each of our new lives we will be given the opportunity to make it a fascinating journey of wonder and fulfilment.
