I'm sitting here in what I think is my office surrounded by mountains of paperwork in a few unidentifiable piles. I think it is my office. It is where my office used to be. However, I am shrouded in uncertainty today because of the clutter that has taken over this area. I must confess to being just a little bit confused at the moment.

Then a thought shattered the silent corridors of my mind.

I hate when that happens. Fortunately, for me, it does not happen very often. But when it does, it is quite an experience for Yours Truly. The thought shattering my mind is simply this. It's September! And

I just cannot believe September is here already. What happened to the summer months? The last thing I knew I was having a little bit of fun in the sun. I was relaxing and enjoying life. Then, summer is over and it is now September.

One of the things I'm going to ask God when I see Him is why He did not make summer longer. I think the summer months should be at least one month longer than it is at present. How hard would that have been?

For as long as I can remember, which really is not that long, I have had one basic philosophy about the summer months. Summer is for fun. I'm not sure how valid this philosophy might be, nor do I much care. It is my hard and fast rule for the summer months that I should try to have as much fun as possible.

One of the practical aspects of this philosophy is postponing everything I can, which basically includes work, to the month of September. For years, this has been a very successful philosophy and I have seen no reason to modify it. That is, until now.

How this works is simple, whenever something comes along resembling work in some fashion, I cheerfully lay it aside and say, "I’ll postpone this until after summer." The after summer I am meaning of course, is September. Throughout the summer, I postpone as much as possible until this mystical month of September.

The problem with summer is that I'm not really keeping tabs on all the stuff I'm postponing until September. The months of June, July and August are not to be cluttered with work. This philosophy of life goes all the way back to the second grade. I remember quite distinctly my second grade teacher, Miss Longnecker, said to us on the very last day of school, "Children, tomorrow begins your summer vacation and I want you all to promise me to have fun all summer long."

I don't remember anything else she taught us in second grade, but I have never forgotten this one, and have kept my promise to her quite religiously.

The joy of summer time is postponing work and concentrating on just having a good time. Everybody knows that you do not get serious about work until after Labor Day.

Not only is summer the time for having fun but it is a time to make promises to yourself. After all, if we cannot keep promises to ourself how are we going to keep promises to other people?

I tried to keep my promise to Miss Longnecker to have as much fun during the summer as possible. She would be proud of me…at least in this respect.

Another promise I make to myself is this, "I'll get caught up with all this in September.” No matter what the project or how much work is involved, postponing it to the month of September seems to solve all my problems, especially the ones during the summer. And I might say I'm rather sincere in this promise to myself.

During the summer I operate on the basic premise that if I ignore something long enough it will go away. Although this has never worked outside of my delusional mind, it has never stopped me from believing it might happen this year. Who knows? This may be the year it does work. Stranger things have happened.

Now it is September and everything I postponed during the summer is sitting here on my desk staring at me just daring me to start with them. Right now I am feeling just a little bit intimidated. After all, fair is fair, and I'm not sure which project deserves the numeral uno position. I would hate to slight a project in this regard.

Then, there are projects that because of the time factor no longer need to be done. But I have to figure out which ones they are and begin eliminating the clutter on my desk. Of course, I always have the option of getting a huge garbage bag and clearing everything off my desk and dispose. If the project is urgent it will reappear somewhere down the line.

There are times to remember and times to forget but for the life of me I cannot remember which is which. The Bible tells me, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" (Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV). Confusion in this regard carries heavy consequences.

Many things in life can be postponed without any detriment to a person's welfare. However, some things cannot be postponed. The Bible says, "(…behold, now is the day of salvation.)" (2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV).

My spiritual responsibilities are not subject to postponement.
