Larry Lilly's Letter Monday September 24, 2007

Again, amazement assaults the faculties of yours truly and I find that I am shaking my head in wonder at the flaws in our Justice system.

Let's suppose that you are on trial for some offense and during the trial it is discovered that your attorney came to court day after, after day on cocaine. A little later your attorney is sent to Federal Prison for tax evasion. And what if an Appellate Court judge ruled that yes, your sentence should be re-visited. What planet are these guys from or more likely, what are they taking?

Jay Stapleton, wrote an article in the Daytona Beach News-Journal announcing that Virginian Larzelere is getting the benefit of The Supreme Court weighing in on her conviction. I add it is about time. Actually way past time.

Back in 1991 Virginia's husband, Norman, a dentist, was brutally slain when a masked gunmen entered his office and killed him. Virginia was charged with murder as was her son. Her son was acquitted; Virginia was found guilty and for sometime was the only woman on death row in the state of Florida.

If her lawyer had been arrested on the way to court driving under the influence of cocaine, he would have faced serious charges for endangering the lives of others. My question is simple. If a driver seat occupied by a drug impaired driver warrants intervention, why not the counsel chair which is occupied by a drug impaired attorney, especially when the client's life hangs in the balance and needs heads up representation by said drug impaired counsel?

In a 2002 hearing three witnesses testified that during Virginia's trial her counsel was on drugs, this according to court records.

In the next while a decision will be made by judges, hopefully clear minded ones on whether or not Virginia continues to breathe.

I ask that you pray for Virginia. It was Virginia Larzelere who spoke with Aileen Wurnos a few days prior to Aileen's execution, giving her one of my Journals, called Braveheart back then, and through explaining the truth about Christ to her, led her to a profession of faith in Christ. I received word from reliable sources that Virginia was moved to another prison, and for some time I could not get my monthly letter to her.

Please do not get the idea that I think our system is broken beyond repair. I do believe and that strongly that too many cases are kept intact to protect image. Governor Ryan cooperated with a university law class in examining a number of shaky convictions in Illinois and 17 men walked off of death row. 17 or one wrongfully convicted person being put to death is unacceptable in a free society.
