Christian Living
It is often difficult for a Christian or, indeed, for anyone as they travel on the road of life, to
be able to do anything other than focus on self. Life has so many ups and downs and is so involved that often, while in the process of being so absorbed with our own problems and situations, opportunities to share the love of God are lost, and there are many people who could benefit from someone having taken the time to show they care.
In our zeal to get through the day the best we can as we journey down the road of every day living, it would serve us well to take the time to look along beside the road for, for there in the shadows are opportunities to encourage and to bless the lives of souls who, were it not for one act of kindness and caring, might have otherwise died in their darkness.
God illustrates in His Word how important it is to Him and for Christians to help others in times of need; whether it be physical or spirtual need.
In Luke 10:27-37 (KJV), Jesus tells a remarkable story of a man who gave selflessy:
(30) And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
(31) And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
(32) And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
(33) But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
(34) And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
(35) And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
(36) Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
(37) And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
The Samaritan could easily have walked on down the road and left this wounded man to chance, but he chose to put himself and his pride aside to do the right thing.
There are many opportunities to do the "right thing" in today's world; to be Samaritans where we are. People are dealing with so many difficult issues, from abortion to abuse and divorce; from murder to suicide and depression, these trials often blinding them to the good in God; they cannot see the love of God through their pain. If we, as Christians, can offer but a pinpoint of light for their darkness, we will have obeyed Jesus' call to "Go, and do thou likewise".
Let's never forget to look beside the road as we walk through each day.
