Song of Solomon 2:8-13 – Love is in the Air
Background:
The Song of Solomon is a 3000 year-old love song. It can be read as an allegory of God’s love for us, aligning his love with the passions of our spirits, or it can be read as a celebration of nature and the passion we feel when we are in love. There is no mention of God in this book. There are passages within that are as steamy and bawdy as any Shakespearian play. It is suggested that the entire collection of songs be read, not simply the verses selected for today’s lesson. As you read these songs consider the importance that God places on love, sexual expression between spouses, and commitment. Also reflect on the beauty of our love relationships and the problems that can occur when walls of communication and barriers of selfishness occur.
Key Verses: (NRSV)
- 8: “The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills.” – Excitement stirs the heart of this songstress at the very thought of her lover. The sight of him quickens her heart.
- 11-12: “…for the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth…” – Springtime has arrived and love is in the air.
- 13b: “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.” – Give yourself to the moment. Enjoy the freshness of new love that Spring has brought.

Promises of the Gospel:
Love is the strongest emotion that God has provided us. His gift of love awakens all other emotions we possess. The Song of Solomon is asking us to do two things with our passion. First it says, God thinks sex is an important aspect in a loving relationship between two people. He validates our love and passion for one another with this gift. The second is to open our hearts to the possibility that our relationship with God should be as passionate as a first kiss between two lovers. When you consider the overwhelming love that God has for you, when you turn and worship Him in a manner that reflects that love, with unbounded passion, you provide Him with the joy of a springtime lover. He is watching you with a song in His heart as you go “leaping upon the mountains, and bounding over the hill.”
