Women
Sammy’s had a baby, the most beautiful, perfect, child you’ve ever seen. Tiny fingers with nails, and little toes with wrinkles and miniature ears, and this baby is hers. Since the news of it forming deep in her womb she’s cared for it - even carried it’s teddy bear and a rug.
Sammy is one of the city's long term homeless girls. Her life is not the "Happy Family" tale of stories on TV. Its a haze of drugs and alcohol, street crime, and as a female, falling victim to horrendous acts of violence and agreesion. There are street liasons and "brothers" but Sammy is alone.
When she knew she was pregnant she stopped sniffing paint, she gave up her pills and weaned herself off morphine using her own nine month strategic plan. Sam decided she’d be free from the needle in time for the big day. Sammy left behind her “grog”, she did that “cold” in one day! This child would not be born needing a grog bottle in its hand. Sammy told her man that, if he loved her and the child, if he wanted to make a life together then he too would have to stop.
Sammy decided that the baby should have a proper name, bot friend and Sam went to office and signed on the line. They were married that day, and they asked for prayer.
As a couple they decided that the baby should grow up knowing about God, but first she would read up to make sure of the facts. That girl was overwhelmed by the extravagant love of God. Transformed by the generosity of One who would gift to the broken ugliness of humanity His only Son. Her decision was made, to live in a place of faith, with Him and in Him, trusting God.
Today we’re all here, Sammy and her man, street friends and even some reconnected family, to celebrate with orange juice and lemonade.
Welfare won’t take her baby, she’s done everything right. Sammy’s had a baby, but there’s more than one new life.
"O Lord, You have searched me and you know me.
For You created my inmost being;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well
Psalm 139: 1,13,14
